STAR-Sentence Treatment for Aphasia Recovery

Study Description:
The Aphasia Recovery Lab at Purdue University is conducting a NIH-funded treatment study. This study focuses on improving production and comprehension of sentences and discourse using implicit learning principles. The goal is to develop a theoretically grounded and cost-effective treatment for aphasia recovery.
Aphasia Friendly Study Description:
The Aphasia Recovery Lab (Director: Jiyeon Lee, PhD, CCC-SLP) at Purdue University is inviting persons with aphasia after stroke to take part in a treatment study. This treatment focuses on our ability to understand and produce lengthy utterances such as sentences and stories. The goal is to develop a cost-effective and easy to use aphasia therapy. Inclusion / Exclusion Criteria:
Inclusion: -Aphasia as a result of left hemisphere stroke -At least 6 months post-onset of stroke -Between 21 and 85 years of age -Native speaker of North American English -If participating remotely, stable internet connection is required via laptop or desktop computer (no tablets, please!) Exclusion: -No history of other neurological conditions besides stroke (Parkinson’s disease or dementia, etc.) Final eligibility to be determined from phone screening and comprehensive language/eligibility testing sessions.Participants should not be enrolled in speech therapy for the entirety of the study.

Duration of Study:
Approximately 4-5 months after eligibility testing is completed. Participants will complete a maximum of 30 sessions including eligibility and follow up sessions. Sessions are approximately 2 hours each. Study participation will last approximately 4-5 months, depending upon eligibility.
