Relationship Communication Supports for People with Aphasia

Study Description:
People with aphasia often experiences changes to romance and sexual intimacy. However, we rarely address these topics in clinical practice because of their taboo nature. We are conducting a research study about the effects of aphasia on romantic relationships and sexual intimacy to better understand our clients’ needs. This study will assess their romantic and sexual concerns, provide them with education and support, and then study the effects of that education.
Aphasia Friendly Study Description:
Do you have aphasia? Has it affected your romantic relationships or sexual intimacy? Do you want to learn more about these topics? We’re looking for people with aphasia to participate in a research study about intimacy, romance, and aphasia. If you join, you will participate in an interview about the changes you have noticed and what kind of topics you would like to learn more about. You will be invited to 4 educational support groups about intimacy and relationships in aphasia. You’ll then complete an interview about how the educational support group affected your life. After each interview, you will receive a $20 Amazon gift card.
Inclusion / Exclusion Criteria:
Inclusion criteria: Must be over the age of 18, must be a person with aphasia or their romantic partner, aphasia must be of an acquired nature (stroke, TBI, brain tumor, etc.), must be able to read/respond in English. Participants can live anywhere in the United States, study is fully virtual.

Duration of Study:
This study is fully virtual and will take place over Zoom. Participants can live anywhere in the United States. Participants will first engage in an interview with the research team regarding the impact that aphasia has had on their romantic life. Next, the participants will engage in four educational support groups about intimacy and aphasia. Finally, participants will meet again with the researcher for a follow-up interview.
